Energy Sanky
Overview
The Energy Flow Sankey is an interactive data visualization that maps how energy moves through generation, transformation, and consumption in the United States. Inspired by the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory’s flow diagrams, the project reimagines the classic static chart as an explorable digital experience—allowing users to trace sources, losses, and end uses dynamically while revealing the complex balance between renewables and fossil fuels.
Results
The final visualization turned dense energy data into something intuitive and engaging. I built layered filtering and color modes to help users see trade-offs between consumption, emissions, and cost. Watching people interact with it and make their own insights confirmed what I hoped for—it became more than a chart; it became a tool for understanding how our energy system really works.
